Confucius Institute at Group T is samen met 19 andere confuciusinstituten uitgeroepen tot Confucius Institute of the Year 2009. Dat gebeurde tijdens de Confucius Institute Conference, die van 11 tot 13 december 2009 plaats vond in Beijing.
De vertegenwoordigers van 282 Confucius Instituten en 272 Confucius Classes uit 88 verschillende landen namen deel aan discussiegroepen die de huidige problematiek en de toekomst van het confuciusinstituutconcept bespraken.
Johan De Graeve, gedelegeerd bestuurder van Groep T en chairman van het Confucius Institute at Group T nam de prijs in ontvangst. Hij leidde tijdens de conferentie de discussiegroep rond het thema 'How can the Chinese and host universities contribute to the trade and economic exchanges through the Confucius Institutes?'.
